Peter
Nicol Exhibition at Radlett - How it went

Former World Champion Peter Nicol delighted the audience when he played
world-ranked No. 47 Tom Richards at Radlett.
Earlier in the day Tom and Peter coached juniors and adults, mainly from
the club and some from as far away as Wimbledon and High Wycombe. One of
the adult ladies said of their last exercise “And, daunted though I was
by the prospect, the fitness circuit was a real gem to go away with.“
This was followed by 2 x 12 minute “matches”
Peter played former Squash Chairman Spencer Dryer, followed by
Beaconsfield junior Stephan Lubeck. Spencer attacked right from the
start of the warm-up. Although he had been warned not to upset or annoy
Peter, Spencer doesn’t mess around. At 8-0 down, Spencer got his first
point with a classic “jiggly-diddler” shot that spun off the end of his
racket, to die at the front of the court. Spencer lasted another one
minute before needing a well-earned rest.
Stephan surprised both Peter and the audience by rallying, retrieving
and playing some winning shots. This was a real tribute to the ability
of the U17 youngster who is ranked both in the UK and Europe.
The last match of the day was Peter Nicol vs Tom
RichardsThe packed audience had
already warmed to the players. Most had been coached in the afternoon
and appreciated the outstanding match that followed. Athleticism, racket
skills and stamina; these were almost shaded by the verbal battle with
the referee, Paul Allen, who entered into the spirit of the exhibition.
Both players sometimes ignored the referee’s cries of stop-stop-stop…at
some minor rule infringement!
Club Chairman Lee Dudack said “I Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed
the event on Saturday. It was a real privilege to have him play at
Radlett and he seemed a really nice guy.
One parent said “This was a wonderful day and both my sons really
enjoyed themselves. I was watching from a coaching point of view and
would love a CD of the event if possible and not too expensive. I
thought the long short two shot routine on the backhand with most groups
was interesting. Both giving each person two shots with Peter moving up
and down the court himself. I hope I'm fit enough to do it!!
Thanks all the club members and staff who helped throughout the event
and to BSG Financial Solutions Limited
www.bsgfs.co.uk our sponsor, and Nigel
Grant representing BSG, who put in a huge effort, to help make the day a
great success.
PS Peter said he would be very happy to return later in the year. I bet
Spencer can’t wait!

The afternoon was a great
success
The juniors and adults seemed tireless in their coached sessions with
Peter and Tom. I suspect they will be a little stiff the following
days...Spencer
vs Peter Match
Former Squash Chairman, Spencer Dryer said "I went out to win and if he
hadn't REALLY stretched himself..?"
Maybe next time Spencer.
