RLTSC Jan 2008 Newsletter….Junior Squash Club

As well as the regular Sunday afternoon sessions, many of the juniors have been involved in tournaments and county events.There are currently 24 Radlett juniors in the top ten of the various age groups in Herts and 13 have been selected for Herts so far this season. Three juniors (Jemma Ockwell, Luke Stewart and Jack Fowler) played in Radlett’s successful 2^nd team in the adult Summer League, and many are participating in the adult internal leagues. This newsletter records the successes of the first half of the season and lists the events coming up in 2008.

1.   SEPTEMBER                                                                                    
The U-9 and U-11 County Championships were held at Radlett on Sept 15^th and attracted a record 49 entries. New member Hannah Daly became U-11 county champion, George Lawrence U-9 runner-up and Aashni Chohan came 4^th (U-9 Girls); Jaymee Malkan was U-11 runner-up,with George Lawrence and Yiannis Hanson beaten semi-finalists. The other age groups were held at Cannons and Berkhamsted later in the month with plenty of Radlett representation. The U-13 Boys’ final was an all-Radlett battle as Josh Ryan beat Angus Gillams, with Will Ruston 5^th. Luke Stewart and Jack Fowler finished 3^rd and 4^th in the U-15s with David Lawrence the Plate winner. Hannah Daly and Sarah Brown reached the semi-finals of the U-13 group and Jemma Ockwell swept to a hat-trick of county titles (U-15, U-17,U-19)

2.   OCTOBER

   Harpenden U-10 Graded..A grade 2^nd George Lawrence, 3^rd James Marsden.

      B grade 1^st Joe Marsden, 2^nd Harvey Presence. D grade 1^st Joshua Cheong.

   Herts U-13B, U-11 v Norfolk at Cannons; the friendly saw a Herts win (20-4)

      with Radlett players Chris Daly, Joseph Green, Jaymee Malkan, Laurence Green

      and Yiannis Hanson involved.

   Radlett Graded..a busy afternoon with 65 playing (including 9 from Norfolk) and

      £80 raised in the raffle for charity.

                 C: 1^st Nikhil Shah, 2^nd Ted Dumbrell, 3^rd Hannah Daly

                 D: 1^st Jake Rolph, 2^nd Harry Dye, 3^rd Alison Small and William Henden

                 E: 1^st Sam Crafer, 2^nd Sam Henden, 3^rd Yiannis Hanson and Dan Steward.

   Herts U-15 Inter-County...Jemma Ockwell, playing at no. 1 helped Herts qualify

      for the next stage of the England Squash competition. In the U-15 Boys’ team,

      Radlett provided 4 out of the 6 squad members..Jack Fowler, Luke Stewart, Josh

      Ryan and Angus Gillams.

   County Girls’Squash Morning (B Stortford)..6 Radlett girls played with Hannah

      Brown 3^rd (A group), Hannah Daly 1^st (group B) and Amy Flood 2^nd in group C .

   Half-term Course..Jun wnrs: Samuel Shashoua, Daniel Jacobson, Maya Malkan

      with runners-up Armando Shashoua, Shray Gadhia, Oliver and Amanda Chaytor.

      Sen 1st: Milind Chohan, Hamish Gillams ; r-up David Jacobson, Vishal Chohan.                           

3.   NOVEMBER

   Herts U-13 Inter-County..Angus Gillams played at 1^st string for the boys with

      Hannah Daly, Amy Flood and Sarah Brown representing the Girls’side.

   U-19 Grand Prix…Jack Fowler, Luke Stewart and Ted Dumbrell were all invited to

      take part in the Herts U-19 competition at Potters Bar.In the final Jack just pipped

      Luke 3-2.

   County Girls’Squash Morning (Cannons)..31 girls took part with 8 from Radlett

      C group 3^rd Sarah Brown, E group 2^nd Georgia Dubowitz, F group 3^rd Aashni

      Chohan, G group 1^st Sonia Green and 2^nd Babita Cooper.

   Radlett Christmas Graded…50 took part with £100 raised at the raffle. We have

      now raised a total of £1523 for the Lemarie Mencap Children’s Centre (Garston)

      at the 23 graded tournaments over the last 4 years.

   British Open..Jemma Ockwell and Angus Gillams travelled to Sheffield to take

      part in the top junior tournament in the world. In the U-13 competition, Angus

      reached the last 32 before losing to the England number 1.It has been a busy

      season for Angus who finished in the top 16 in the British Closed Tournament and

      has been involved in Herts county teams, the South east regional squad and many

      tournaments around the country. Jemma, currently  at 2 on the England U-15

      ranking list, reached the last 16 at the British Open.She has been in the U-15

      National Squad since September, won the B Stortford tournament and is currently

      Herts number 1 at U-15, U-17 and U-19 level.
