Ben Davis Latest
on 25th April at the ITF 18U world ranking tournament on the clay courts at Plovdiv, Bulgaria, unseeded Radlett junior Ben Davis and fellow 15 year old Libor Salaba of the Czech Republic won the Doubles title.

Having put out Bulgarian 4th seeds Kuzmanov/Neykov 6-4 6-2 and Austrian pair Belluti/Hepp 7-5 6-4, the semi-final was a much closer contest as Ben and partner recovered from 2-5 down in the 3rd set to beat Fioriti(SUI)/Nourrissat(FR) 6-3 2-6 7-5

The final saw the British/Czech pairing defeat 17 year old Swedes Tim Goranson and Jonathan Greczula 7-5 3-6 6-3 Ben also reached the round of 16 in the singles event before losing to 3rd seed, 18U world ranked 412 Ilya Lebedev of Russia. The points gained at this event should see Ben's junior world ranking improve 175 places to about 650.

Ben is currently at school three day a week. He plans to switch to full time tennis and correspondence course "A" levels after the completion of his GCSE's in June.

In the ITF tournament held at the Nottingham Tennis Centre in early April, 15 year old club member Ben Davis moved into the worlds top 1000 at under-eighteen for the first time and is now world ranked 825. Gaining Junior ITF points at grades 2-5 requires a player
to reach at least the last 16 of the main draw. Having won three rounds and after holding two match points Ben lost a very close quarter final to world number 381 Chris Harrison 7-6(5) 4-6 6-7(3). In the next few weeks Ben will be competing in ITF Junior events in Bulgaria and Turkey. We wish him well.

County Tennis Championships
Radlett Junior Tennis member Ben Davis, aged 15, helped Hertfordshire to success in the 2008 LTA Under-18 county championships last week. Competing in Division Two, against Nottinghamshire, South Wales and Middlesex, the Hertfordshire boys team finished top of their group to gain promotion to Division One.

The round robin competition takes place over three days, with the highest-placed promoted and the lowest side relegated. Teams of six play both singles and doubles matches.

On the first two days Hertfordshire defeated both Notts and South Wales, however with all rubbers counting in case of a tie, the promotion battle was not decided until the final day. For each of the last two years Herts missed promotion by a single match and with the Herts one and two unable to play, Ben found himself facing a tough challenge against Middlesex number one, Alex Golding. In what proved to be a close match Radlett's Ben won after three tough sets to seal the tie for Hertfordshire.
